Venue of the Week – Café Royal
Originally opened in 1865 by French couple Daniel and Celestine Thévenon, the Hotel Café Royal has been an icon of London’s Regent Street for over 150 years. Situated just minutes’ walk from the world famous Piccadilly Circus the hotel is in an ideal location to get to any part of the capital.
Redesigned and restored by David Chipperfield Architects, the hotel is a blend of 1860s, 1920s and 21st Century style, which makes for not just a visually striking hotel, but one that reflects the history of the area in which it sits. The highlight of the hotel is the Oscar Wilde Bar, a beautifully restored 1865 Louis XVI room, offering guests one of the most luxurious spaces to enjoy afternoon tea. Other bars include the Green Bar, which was designed to reflect the Café Royal Cocktail book.
In comparison to the exquisitely decorative bars and restaurants, the bedrooms and suites are designed to be elegantly simple. The most contemporary of the spaces, the bedrooms do not contain the lavish detail of the Oscar Wilde Bar, but that doesn’t make them any less beautiful, designed with either Portland stone or Oak panels, the bedrooms offer a wonderfully relaxing environment away from the hustle and bustle of London. However, the simplicity of the design doesn’t mean they are lacking facilities, with B&O televisions, coffee machine, designer bathroom amenities and complimentary WIFI the hotel ensures that guests are not left wanting for anything.
If you’re looking for complete luxury, the hotel offers six suites ranging from the junior suite which features a king sized bed, Carrara marble bathroom and fantastic views over the city up to the hugely impressive Dome Penthouse. The Dome, is set in the Grade II listed section of the building, with three bedrooms, large outdoor terrace with views looking out over London, LED lighting system and DJ sound system (if you’re looking to party) and a beautiful Carrara marble bathroom with rainfall shower and separate bath.
The hotel offers six meeting rooms, all in various sizes. The biggest room they have is the Louis XVI style Pompadour Ballroom, sitting 120 for a banquet and arguably one of the prettiest spaces you can have your event. Other meeting rooms reflect the contemporary feel of the bedrooms with oak panelling, modern lighting and integrated AV making the Café Royal a very versatile hotel to hold your events.
With business development run by the hugely successful JG Collection who look after some of the best independent and privately owned hotels worldwide (including the Ampersand Hotel, a previous venue of the week) this hotel is not only a stunning property, but has a brilliant team ensuring it will be a continued success for another 150 years.
